[Feature | Inside eterble] The Untold Story of Its Birth: The Crisis Faced by a Tablecloth Rental Company
◆Is Renting Not Eco-Friendly? Annual Disposal of 20 Tons of Tablecloths
We are facing various social issues, such as climate change and environmental destruction. While goals are being set at the national and organizational levels, the industrial sector is also expected to take action as a member of society. In Japan, many companies have started to declare and practice “ESG management” and commitment to the “SDGs” (Sustainable Development Goals).
World Service, which operates “eterble”, has been engaged in the rental business of tablecloths used in hotels and wedding venues since its establishment. The basic idea of renting is “to borrow when needed,” which many people may see as efficient and economically rational. Indeed, for the renters, there are advantages such as having access to well-maintained, high-quality products. However, as the provider, we have faced a significant challenge—the unavoidable disposal of products.
Tablecloths used in weddings and special parties, which are major life events, cannot be used if they have even small stains or scratches. These products, after fulfilling their role as rental items, inevitably end up being discarded. The amount of these discarded items has reached as much as 20 tons annually.
“Tablecloths used in weddings, where couples vow eternity, and in banquets and parties, should not harm the future of our planet and society.”
With this belief, our management and employees have deepened their understanding of a sustainable society, strengthened awareness towards achieving the SDGs, and enhanced product planning. After a year of research and development, we developed “recycled polyester yarn” made from discarded products, leading to the creation of “recycled tablecloths.”
