Floral Designer Satoko Hayashi “Like enjoying the flowers”

Our INTERVIEW series ask a variety of professionals for tips on how to enrich our daily lives and naturally participate in sustainable initiatives. In this volume, we visited the home of floral designer Satoko Hayashi to ask her about “how to enjoy life at the table as you enjoy flowers”. Satoko has studied floral design in U.K. and is now based in Tokyo. She unravels to us from her sincere perspective of dealing with flowers.

-Always ahead of the trends;  Satoko keeps earning high acclaim from various industries with her excellent aesthetic and the reliable skills.-

Satoko    Each flower has a life of its own.

I am in the business of decorating flowers on daily basis. Flowers touch people’s eyes, and people find flowers beautiful. I believe my job is to create a memory of someone’s happiness. That is why I cherish the time and space I spend with flowers in my life. Flowers have many different expressions, both in bud and in bloom.

-Time when Satoko uses tablecloths-

Satoko    The time I use tablecloths in my life is when family and friends gather at my home for a home party. It is easy for a table at home to show the signs of daily life, which you do not want to show at gatherings with guests. I incorporate tablecloths to hide it, and of course to glamourize the table. I think it is even more wonderful if such table coordination could be done so casually and effortlessly. Other times, I use tablecloths when I want to tone down the table’s wood surface, to make it into more festive appeal for the flowers and plates, or to simply when I want to change my mood. This goes the same with flowers. I think the beauty of tablecloths is that they can change the impression of the place so dynamic and instantly.

-Just like enjoying flowers-

Satoko    A tablecloth is an item that can easily change the atmosphere of a dining table just by laying one out. Even a slightly outdated table can be revitalized by putting on a tablecloth. They also improve the impression of tableware and cutlery, and you can also express the seasons by the cloths colors. While home décor and furniture cannot easily be changed, tablecloths can easily control the impression of a home space. It is similar to enjoying the flowers.

-Combination tips-

Satoko    Normally I tend to pick tablecloths in colors such as black, beige and grey. Still, I am not only limited to these colors. Depending on the scenes and occasions, I choose the color of tablecloths accordingly. Sometimes I try to incorporate seasonal colors to enjoy different atmosphere. Just like changing clothes, I think the fun part of tablecloths is that you can so easily change the impression of your home. Just like you enjoy flowers according to the seasons and scenes, I hope you all to enjoy coordinating your tablecloths in the same way.
